On the Rise: Porter Street Residences Topping Out

Mr. Ning Yuan, Chairman & President of China State Construction together with Dr. You of the Ministry of Education hosted a Topping Out Ceremony at Porter Street Residences on October 6th to commemorate the completion of the superstructure. The ceremony was a celebration to bring together the people who made the project happen.

Project Summary
China Construction America, Inc. (CCA), a division of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), will be managing a design-build project for new housing for the staff of the Education Office of the Embassy of the Peoples’ Republic of China. CCA appointed Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn (EE&K) Architects to design the new facility. This project will replace an existing outmoded complex on Porter Street, in North West Washington DC, just over one mile from the Chinese Embassy.

The new facility, at approximately 63,000 square feet (gross area), will include 27 apartment units to house permanent and visiting staff of the Ministry of Education and scholars participating in various programs administered in the US by the Education Office of the Embassy. The building will also contain reception and recreation rooms to be used by the residents and the Education Office staff. Taking advantage of the existing steeply sloped site, the new building will match the 3-story scale of neighboring apartment buildings while concealing underground parking and service areas that were missing from the previous structure.

The new building will re-interpret the residential scale of living units and stair towers of near-by residential buildings in a contemporary vocabulary of terraced walkways and projecting entry elements. Working with the topography and natural setting, the building will be anchored at the eastern end of the site with a dramatic pavilion housing the main lobby, recreation rooms, and common program spaces. These areas will have generous glazed areas open to the surrounding trees and landscape.
