Franklin L. Williams Middle School
Jersey City, NJ
EE&K and Clarke Caton Hintz designed the new Franklin L. Williams Middle School. Located on a sloping site in the Heights neighborhood, the new school houses 969 students in grades 6 through 8, including 100 special needs students. In addition to classrooms, the school features a gym, a cafeteria with full kitchen, an auditorium, and a full complement of specialty areas including art and science labs.
Each teaching space provides the flexibility for integration, and evolution, of educational technology as well as current and future teaching methods. The new school was carefully designed to address the varied context around the site and create positive outdoor spaces that serve as informal extensions of the classroom.
i The project won the American Institute of Architects, New Jersey Chapter, 2007 Merit Award.
